Handyman or Specialist? Matching Home Repairs to the Right Tradesperson

Which small jobs suit a handyman, which need a qualified specialist, and what to ask before you book

Every home has a list of small jobs that never quite get done: a door that sticks, a shelf that needs putting up, a dripping tap, a television waiting to go on the wall. Some of these are perfect for a handyman, while others need a qualified specialist. Knowing which is which saves time and money, and keeps you on the right side of the regulations.

What a handyman is good for

A good handyman covers a wide range of small, practical jobs in a single visit. Typical tasks include:

  • mounting televisions and hiding cables
  • assembling flat-pack furniture
  • patching plaster and repairing small holes in walls
  • adjusting and rehanging doors, and fitting locks
  • putting up shelves, curtain poles, blinds, mirrors and pictures
  • replacing taps, shower heads and toilet seats
  • fitting smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Grouping several jobs into one half-day or full-day booking is usually the most cost-effective way to work. Many people keep a running list and book handyman services in Cardiff or nearby when it reaches half a day's work.

When you need a specialist instead

Some jobs look small but legally need a qualified tradesperson. Any work on gas appliances or pipework must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Many electrical jobs, such as new circuits or work in bathrooms, are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and need a registered electrician. Structural work, such as removing a wall, needs a builder and usually building control approval.

A trustworthy handyman will tell you when a job is outside their scope, rather than attempting it anyway. If you are comparing quotes for a handyman in Newport or elsewhere, ask which jobs they refer to specialists. A clear answer is a good sign.

Roofs: always a job for a roofer

Roof work is one area where a general handyman is rarely the right choice. Working at height needs proper access equipment, and a roof repair done badly can let in water that damages ceilings and timbers below. Slipped slates, failing ridge mortar, worn lead flashing and flat roof leaks all need someone with roofing experience.

Coastal towns are particularly hard on roofs, as salt air and strong winds speed up wear on mortar and fixings. Experienced roofers in Barry and along the coast will usually inspect and photograph the roof first, so you can see the problem before agreeing the repair.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Is the price fixed? Ask for a written quote or a set rate for a half or full day.
  2. Are you insured? Public liability insurance protects you if something goes wrong.
  3. Which jobs do you refer on? Gas, notifiable electrical and structural work should go to specialists.
  4. Do you supply materials? Check whether fixings and parts are included.
  5. Can you work evenings or weekends? Useful if you cannot take time off work.

Matching each job to the right tradesperson keeps your home safe and your list moving. For more on choosing roofers and related trades, see our roofing services category.
