Your First Skin Treatment: Consultations, Patch Tests and Aftercare

Lexsee Business Directory

What happens at a skin consultation, why patch tests matter and the aftercare that protects your results.

Practitioner examining a client's skin before treatment

Booking a skin treatment for the first time can feel daunting. Clinics use unfamiliar terms, every treatment seems to promise similar results and it is not always clear what will happen on the day. A good clinic will guide you through it, but knowing what to expect before you go makes the whole process easier and helps you judge whether a clinic is doing things properly.

Step one: the consultation

Any reputable skin clinic will start with a consultation before treating you. It is your chance to explain what bothers you about your skin, and the clinic's chance to assess your skin type, check your medical history and recommend the right treatment. Expect questions about:

  • Medication, including acne treatments and anything that makes the skin more sensitive
  • Allergies and previous reactions to skincare or treatments
  • Recent sun exposure, sunbeds or fake tan
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding and any skin conditions

Step two: matching the treatment to the concern

Different concerns need different approaches, which is why a consultation matters more than a menu. Uneven skin tone and dark patches, for example, can be caused by sun damage, hormones or past breakouts, and treatment for dark spots and uneven skin tone is chosen according to the type of pigmentation and your skin tone. Other common pairings include:

  • Breakouts and congestion: peels that work inside the pores, alongside home care
  • Dull or rough skin: exfoliating treatments such as dermaplaning or a light peel
  • Loss of firmness: treatments that encourage new collagen

Step three: patch tests

For many treatments, including stronger peels, a patch test comes before the first full session. A small area is treated and checked for any reaction, which is especially important for sensitive skin. A chemical peel in Coventry or anywhere else should be chosen to suit your skin, starting gently and building up over a course rather than going straight to the strongest option.

Step four: aftercare and recovery

Aftercare is where results are protected. Most treatments call for gentle skincare for a few days, no picking or scrubbing, and daily sun protection. Recovery varies by treatment:

  • Dermaplaning and light peels: little or no downtime
  • Medium peels: some flaking or peeling for several days
  • Plasma treatments: small crusts that should be left to fall away naturally

For loose skin on the eyelids, neck or tummy, plasma skin tightening has a short recovery period, but the full result builds over several weeks as new collagen forms, so patience is part of the process.

Signs of a good clinic

  • A consultation before any treatment, with no pressure to book on the day
  • Clear explanations of results, downtime and the number of sessions needed
  • Treatments only for clients aged 18 and over
  • Written aftercare advice and a way to get in touch if you have concerns
